Here's how Irish parents can get up to €285 for school clothes and shoes

Irish parents can now apply to receive a cost-of-living payment of up to €285 for school clothing and footwear. 

The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BSCFA) is paid automatically to many families, however families who do not get an automatic payment can apply through MyWelfare online. 

Applications opened today (June 12) and will close on September 30, 2024. 

Is my child eligible for the payment? 

You can get the BSCFA payment if you have a child that qualifies, and meets the following conditions: 

  1. You are getting a qualifying social welfare payment, or are participating in an approved employment, education or training support scheme.

    This includes the following payments: 

    Deserted Wife's Benefit

    Illness Benefit

    Disablement Benefit

    Carer's Benefit

    Health and Safety Benefit

    Invalidity Pension

    Injury Benefit

    State Pension (Contributory)

    Partial Capacity Benefit

    Jobseeker's Benefit

    Widow's/Widower's/Surviving Civil Partner’s Contributory Pension

    Guardian's Payment (Contributory)

    Maternity Benefit

    Adoptive Benefit 

    Blind Person's Pension

    Carer's Allowance

    Deserted Wife's Allowance

    Disability Allowance

    Working Family Payment

    Farm Assist

    State Pension (Non-Contributory)

    One Parent Family Payment

    Supplementary Welfare Allowance

    Jobseeker's Allowance

    Widow's Widower’s Surviving Civil Partner’s (Non-Contributory) Pension

    Guardian's Payment (Non-Contributory)

  2. Your household is within the BSCFA income limits 
  3. You and each child you claim the BSCFA for are resident in Ireland.

If you are getting a social welfare payment, you must be getting an Increase for a Qualified Child (IQC) with your payment. 

How much am I entitled to? 

Families can receive €160 for eligible children between the ages of four and 11, and €285 for children aged between 12 and 22. 

Children aged between 18 to 22 must be returning to full-time second-level education in a recognised school in the autumn of 2024.
