There has been an outpouring of shock after a cat was allegedly deliberately set on fire before being recued.

The horror incident was posted by the DSPCA who posted a picture of the cat who they said "was deliberately set on fire by a group of young people."

A statement from the DSPCA continued: "She arrived to the DSPCA this evening [Wednesday] in such a horrendous state, the full set of images are too distressing to show.

"Her injuries are extensive and knowing this was done deliberately with such cruel intent makes us wonder what hope there is for animals in our society."

They went on to say their inspectors are responding to and experiencing "a massive surge in cruelty calls at the moment, some days more than we can cope with."

"Each day we are operating at almost full capacity so we need support."

Followers of the DSPCA were horrified and responded in the comments. One woman said: "Animal cruelty law needs to be updated and harsher punishment. How anyone can inflict such cruelty to any animal is beyond comprehension. No regard or respect for any person or animal. What will these young people do to animals as they become adults is very worrying."

Another added: "I'll never understand how people can be so cruel to animals. This just broke my heart. Something needs to be done. I hope they get caught. Please god the beautiful baby will be okay."
