Fine Gael Senator ordered to pay €39k over an assault outside a pub

Senator John McGahon

A High Court jury has ordered Fine Gael senator John McGahon to pay a man €39,000 over a late night assault outside a Co Louth pub.

Breen White with an address in Castleblayney had sued for assault and battery outside The Rum House on Park Street, Dundalk on June 16th, 2018.

Senator McGahon denied the claims and said he was assaulted and had acted in self-defence.

The jury, after just under 3¼ hours, found Mr White had been assaulted and awarded a total of €60,000 and apportioned blame at 65 per cent against Mr McGahon and 35 per cent against Mr White, the Irish Times reported.

The Louth senator was previously acquitted of serious assault after a trial at Dundalk Circuit Criminal Court.
