Roderic O'Gorman has been elected as the new leader of the Green Party after a close internal vote.

Minister for Children and Integration O'Gorman won out over Offaly Senator Pippa Hackett. The contest was prompted by the shock resignation last month of longtime leader Eamon Ryan.

The result of the vote was delivered today with 1,896 valid votes cast among over 3,000 Green Party members. Roderic O'Gorman received 984 votes while Pippa Hackett got 912.
