Full day of flights cancelled at Weston Airport after fire breaks out near control tower

Flights have been cancelled for the day at Weston Airport after a major fire broke out at the Dublin site.

The fire occurred near the control tower of the Lucan airport at 10pm on Tuesday, and the fire was quickly reported to emergency services.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but the private airport's business has been massively affected for the day.

All arriving and departing flights cancelled on Wednesday as a result, as the airport remains closed..

A full investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched on Wednesday morning.

In a statement, the airport said: “Weston can confirm there was a small outbreak of fire in a room close to the Control Tower at 22:00 Tuesday night 24th September. The fire was brought under control by the Fire Service and there were no injuries.

“A full investigation into the cause of the fire will start in the morning. The Airport is closed Wednesday with all flights cancelled.”

Dublin Fire Brigade said firefighters from Tallaght, Blanchardstown, and Tara Street were called to the fire. In a statement, it said: “The fire was contained and quickly extinguished by firefighters in breathing apparatus.

The building was then ventilated using positive pressure fans to clear any remaining smoke.

Weston bills itself as “Ireland’s only executive airport” offering services for helicopters, and private planes and jets.

The airport was established by Darby Kennedy in 1931, and is home to several flying clubs.
