Irish Defence Forces say recent Israeli incursions near Lebanon "have raised significant concerns"

In an update on the situation in Lebanon, the Irish Defence Forces have said that recent incursions by Israel have raised significant concerns, particularly in regards to breaches near Irish Battalion posts.
The Defence Forces said that Israel has recently breached the Blue Line (BL) - which divides Lebanon from Israel and the Golan Heights - in multiple areas which has caused concern, especially regarding breaches near Irish Battalion posts.
According to the Defence Forces: "These incursions have been accompanied by the establishment of a new military zone on the Israeli side, suggesting an intent to expand operations further."
They said that further incursions into other battalion areas along the BL were observed overnight which has caused tensions to increase in the region.
They added: "As engagements have shifted north of UN Post 6-52, movement has become severely restricted. Road access has been curtailed due to these military actions, leading to the recommendation that sheltering in place remains the safest option at this time."
The Defence Forces said that the Battalion Commander and the Battalion Sergeant Major of the 124 Infantry Battalion are in constant contact with the personnel deployed in UNP 6-52,  regularly providing updates and information in this dynamic and fast moving military situation.

Tánaiste and Minister for Defence Micheál Martin said on Saturday regarding the situation in Lebanon: "I am deeply concerned at the escalation of violence in Lebanon, and the increased activity by the Israeli Defence Forces in the area of the Blue Line which divides Lebanon from Israel and the Golan Heights."

The Tánaiste has described these incursions as "an unacceptable violation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701."

He continued, saying: "I have maintained constant contact with our military leaders and have held discussions with the United Nations and others. I have stressed the absolute need to protect our troops. I want to pay tribute to the bravery, professionalism and resilience of our soldiers."

The Tánaiste acknowledged the anxiety felt by those with family and friends stationed in Lebanon, saying: "I am particularly conscious of the understandable concern and anxieties of loved ones at home, and want to thank them for their forbearance in what is a worrying time. Arrangements have been put in place by the Defence Forces to ensure that families are kept informed."
