A young mother has died following a serious incident in County Limerick this Saturday afternoon. 

According to gardai, a young woman in her early 20s was rushed to hospital following an incident in Rathkeale at around midday.

The woman has since passed away. It is understood she was the mother of a young child.

"Gardaí are currently at the scene of a serious incident involving a vehicle that occurred at the entrance of a private property in Rathkeale, Co Limerick at approximately 12.15pm," said a garda spokesperson earlier this Saturday.

"A female pedestrian, aged in her 20s, was injured in the incident and has been conveyed to University Hospital Limerick," they added.

According to a garda statement, the vehicle, a silver Ford Transit van, "failed to remain at the scene."

It's understood a number of people rushed to the woman's aid including bystanders, members of the gardai and paramedics.

There is understood to be a large garda presence in the town this Saturday night.

Gardai are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Any road users or pedestrians who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and who were in the area between 11.30am and 1pm this Saturday are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.

Any witnesses or anyone with information about the incident are asked to contact Rathkeale garda station in Limerick on 069 63222, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
