Seriously? Gardaí catch lorry driver on phone while driving on ice covered roads

Gardaí spotted the driver of a HGV lorry using their mobile phone this week on extremely icy roads and prosecutions are set to follow.

This kind of behaviour while driving is particularly dangerous as the recent cold snap has made the roads treacherous, with many motorists across the country having to abandon their cars due to the severe ice.

In a post on Facebook, Gardaí said,

"Seriously!!!

"Roads policing unit Kilkenny detected driver of HGV lorry driving while using mobile phone. Roads are icy and this behaviour is very dangerous and you are at higher risk of causing a serious collision while distracted.

"Stay off mobiles and slow down and arrive alive. Prosecution to follow."

Several people were quick to comment their opinions under the post echoing what the Gardaí had said, one commenter said,

"Good few drivers around on mobile phones one lad yesterday nearly drove into me not watching what he was doing especially in this weather people have no respect for other road users either."

Another said,

"Should be an automatic 3 month driving ban for using a mobile while driving, make people fear picking a mobile up."

While another said,

"Mobile phones are a scourge with driving. In this day and age with blue tooth there is absolutely no excuse to be on a phone."
