More than 140,000 students will begin State exams at thousands of centres across the country this Wednesday
A record number of candidates are due to commence their Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied and Junior Cycle examinations across the country this Wednesday.
More than 140,000 students will sit the exams in 5,846 main and almost 10,000 special examination centres through the network of over 800 post-primary schools, and other venues.
Ahead of the first exams this Wednesday morning a massive logistical exercise was completed on Tuesday involving the secure distribution of around four million examination papers to the examination superintendents responsible for supervising the written examinations.
Speaking before the start of the examinations Jacinta Stewart, Chairperson of the State Examinations Commission commented that the beginning of the exams marks a "real milestone in the educational journey" of students.

"On behalf of my fellow Commissioners and the staff of the SEC, I want to offer our sincere best wishes to all those taking examinations this year. I also want to express my appreciation to parents and families as well as school communities for supporting these candidates at this very important time in their lives," she said.
The examinations will run until Tuesday, June 24 for Leaving Certificate; Thursday, June 12 for Leaving Certificate Applied; and Monday, June 16 for Junior Cycle examinations.
Ms. Stewart also expressed her particular thanks to principals, teachers, special needs assistants, and other school staff for they work they doing in facilitating the holding of the examinations.
The exams begin at 9.30am with English Paper 1 for most Leaving Certificate students. LCA and Junior Cycle candidates will also sit English papers.
A total of 61,632 candidates have registered to sit the main Leaving Certificate written exams, an increase of 5% compared to last year.
There has been an 11% rise in students opting for the Leaving Certificate Applied programme, with 4,512 students choosing that pathway.
A total of 74,313 candidates are due to begin their Junior Cycle exams this Wednesday morning.
