ALERT! Urgent recall underway as Smyths pulls more toys containing asbestos from shelves

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has alerted the public across Ireland to an urgent recall being carried out by Smyths Toys amid further asbestos fears.

Smyths Toys is carrying out a recall of various Dig products including,

  • 10pcs Dig It Out Dinosaur Eggs
  • Gem Dig Kit 12 Gem Pack

  • Pocket Play Gold Treasure Chest Dig It 
  • Gem Dig Kit 8 Pack

The products present a risk to health as the sand may contain asbestos. Asbestos is a banned substance across the EU because it poses a risk to health.  

The CCPC continues to engage with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Further updates will be provided as soon as additional information becomes available.

The product was sold in Smyths Toys Stores.

What to do:

The CCPC is advising consumers who have the product in their home to do the following:  

  • Stop using the product immediately.  
  • If the sand is still packaged, place it in a heavy-duty plastic bag, seal it securely, label it clearly and store it in a secure location out of reach of children. Contact your local authority for advice on collection and disposal. 
  • If the sand has been used, clean sites where the product was used using wet cloths to avoid generating dust. Wear gloves and a protective FFP2 face mask or equivalent. Double bag the sand, gloves, mask and cloths. Seal it securely, label it clearly and store it in a secure location out of reach of children. Contact your local authority for advice on collection and disposal. 
  • Keep children and other people away from areas where the sand has been used until the area has been cleaned. 
  • Prior to disposal contact Smyths Toys to request a refund.
  • This notice will be updated if more information becomes available.
