This is becoming a big problem

"One woman has to bring her child on a 40km round trip to school," a councillor has claimed as the lack of ASD units in Carlow has been raised again.

A public meeting organised by campaign group, Open Your Doors - ASD Inclusion, took place recently and the group claims there is only one school in Carlow Town that has an appropriate unit for Autistic children.

Speaking recently, Cllr Andrea Dalton said she had been contacted by one lady who has a 40km round-trip to bring her child with additional needs to school.

"A child's right to education is written into the Constitution," and it's not being upheld, she added.

Cllr Fintan Phelan has also asked that Carlow County Council write to the Ministers for Education and Health over the shortage of ASD units in the county to ask them what their strategy is to tackle the issue.

"A number of people have contacted me about not being able to get a place in a school," he said.
