Maybe you could help out? Put up some bunting? Direct traffic, lift chairs/tables, maybe make refreshments

The Rathvilly/Kiltegan Parish is hosting pilgrims from three different countries during the Pope's visit this month and the whole community is busy getting the place ready.

Local residents will provide a bed and breakfast for visitors travelling to attend the World Meeting of Families Congress in Dublin for the week which will end in a mass celebrated by Pope Francis in the Phoenix Park on August 26.

Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council, Brian O'Donoghue, said: "This is a huge event for the Rathvilly/Kiltegan Parish. The parish is the only one out of the 56 parishes in the diocese to be hosting families for the world meeting of families.

"Our parish is hosting guests from Poland, Russia and Belarus.

"Maybe you could help out? Put up some bunting? Direct traffic, lift chairs/tables, maybe make refreshments, there are so many ways to help out!"

There is a meeting for volunteers this Thursday (August 9) at 7.30pm in the Parish Meeting Room.

Cllr Donoghue added: "If you think you can be of any help we’d love to see you there. No help too small."

It is planned that all the community and local organisations will play a part in the week of festivities which will begin with an opening prayer followed by street entertainment provided by local musicians on Monday, August 20 kicking off at 7pm in St Patrick's Church.
