Cllr Fintan Phelan will be hosting a Career Advice public meeting on Thursday, February 28 in the Seven Oaks Hotel at 8pm.

This meeting will be addressed by three guest speakers, Brian Mooney, Mary Hanafin and Seamus Lahart.

Cllr Phelan said: "Brian Mooney is one of Ireland's leading career guidance counsellors and an Irish Times education analyst. Brian regularly features on radio panels when it comes to discussions around education.

"Mary Hanafin, as a former minister and teacher is well versed in the world of education. Mary served as Minister for Education from 2004 until 2008.

"Mary will bring a huge wealth of knowledge to this meeting. Seamus Lahart is President of the Teachers Union of Ireland and is keenly interested in the area of apprenticeships."

The speakers will speak on a number of topics, in particular, CAO options, apprenticeships and Back to Education.

They will offer advice to those present on how to effectively research their CAO application, further education options and how to gain an apprenticeship.

He added: "The idea for this public meeting came from the Youth Needs Assessment that I undertook when I was Mayor of Carlow.

"Hundreds of Carlow students were consulted as part of this and a key finding was that young people would be interested in more educational, life skills and employment events.

"This meeting fits perfectly with that and as a local public representative I think it is important that informational events such as this are held.

"Everyone is welcome to this meeting and it may be of particular interest to students, their parents, teachers and those who are interested in returning to education."
