Revealed: Capping works at Powerstown landfill site 'four months ahead of schedule'

Project to be completed by June of this year
Carlow County Council has confirmed that capping works at Powerstown landfill site are "four months ahead of schedule".
Works to restore the Powerstown landfill site - which includes capping - are forming part of a €1.6m contract awarded to Priory Construction Ltd.
Landfill capping is a containment technology that forms a barrier between the contaminated media and the surface, thereby shielding humans and the environment from the harmful effects of its contents and perhaps limiting the migration of the contents.
As part of the Council's commitment to fully restore the site, worked commenced on the capping, leachate collection, gas collection and surface water management at the site in July of last year.

Works were expected to be completed in two phases, July to November 2018 and March to September 2019.
However, it has now been revealed that capping works (Phase 2) commenced in January, "four months ahead of schedule".
The Council said: "Phase 1 is now substantially completed with just the final top soiling and seeding to be carried out in mid to late spring.
"It is anticipated that the project will be completed by June of 2019."
