A number of vehicles without insurance have been seized by gardaí in Carlow in February, it has been confirmed.

Carlow Road Policing Unit,  aided by the new insurance app on their official mobility devices, says they have seized a significant number of vehicles for no insurance this month.

Gardaí now have live access to the insurance database at the roadside so they say any attempts to mislead them with fake discs or cancelled policies will not work.

Gardaí have urged all drivers to ensure all documentation is in order before taking to the roads.

Failure to have motor insurance or driving without insurance in Ireland can see drivers face a fine of up to €5,000, and a court appearance.

The offence sees 5 penalty points applied. However, at the discretion of the court, a term of imprisonment not exceeding 6 months can also be imposed.
