Irish sports stars of tomorrow from across 12 counties have had their talent and hard work recognised with UCC Sports Scholarships for the 2022-2023 academic year.

A total of 82 students across 17 sports, hailing from Carlow, Cavan, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Kilkenny, Kildare, Laois, Limerick, Sligo, Tipperary, and Waterford have been awarded, with the recipients named at the launch of the 22/23 programmes at the UCC Sports Grounds in the Mardyke Pavilion.

The programme is tailored for UCC’s sports scholarship students and the university’s elite teams and athletes performing at top level sport in 3rd level sport, Cork, Munster, Ireland and internationally.

The university works with its clubs, coaches and specialist staff in the areas of sports science, conditioning, nutrition, sports medicine, sports physiology and sports analysis. UCC also works in partnership with national governing bodies, provincial sports organisations, and with Sport Ireland in the delivery of their high performance strategy.

Speaking at the announcement, UCC President John O’Halloran said, "UCC values and recognises our outstanding student athletes and the major contribution they make to themselves, sports, their communities, families and schools. We thank our extraordinary coaches, volunteers, Clubs Executives and staff who are supporting them. We also would like to express our sincere gratitude to our sponsors who support our scholarship programme – Bank of Ireland, Gym+Coffee; MJ Dowling; Moss Keane family, Jason Foley Family and the UCC GAA Alumni. These sponsors and their support make a significant contribution to the development and success of our athletes."

Morgan Buckley, Head of UCC Sport said, "Congratulations to all our teams, and athletes. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and their coaches, volunteers and clubs who support them with our great staff and services at UCC. The services we can provide to our performance teams and athletes are greatly enhanced by the UCC Sport scholarship programme. Our priority is to ensure they can balance their studies and sport. We are delighted to be one of three universities in Ireland to secure the Accreditation for Student-Athlete Support standard (ASAS) which is an accreditation recently developed and launched by Sport Ireland aimed at providing equal opportunity to all high-performing student-athletes to combine sport and education."

Kellie Ann Mahon, UCC Club’s Executive President, said "The value and support to our students makes UCC a great place to study and excel in sport. We have fantastic levels of participation in sport and we are very proud of them all."
