Temperatures are set to rise to a balmy 18 degrees this weekend but Met Éireann has a gloomy warning for Ireland as heavy and persistent rain is set to dominate in the days ahead.
Today
Becoming cloudy with patchy rain or drizzle in the west and southwest this morning, but staying dry with occasional sunshine in other areas. The rain will spread northeastwards during the afternoon and evening, turning more persistent, but won't reach the northeast until tonight. Highest temperatures of 12 to 16 degrees in a light to moderate southeasterly breeze.
Tonight will be cloudy and wet with widespread rain, along with mist, and hill and coastal fog. Spot flooding is possible. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees with a light to moderate southeasterly breeze.

Friday
Tomorrow morning will be cloudy and wet with widespread rain, along with mist, and hill and coastal fog. The rain will slowly move eastwards, persisting in the east throughout the day. Sunny spells and scattered heavy showers will follow, which may cause spot flooding. Highest temperatures of 11 to 16 degrees, warmest in Connacht and Munster, with a moderate to fresh southeasterly wind, easing and becoming southwesterly or variable after the rain.
Rather cloudy and wet with showers and brisk southwesterly breezes on Friday night. The showers will ease later in the night with clear spells developing. Winds will fall light too with some patchy mist or fog forming. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees.

Saturday
A mix of cloudy periods and sunny spells to start but more cloud will develop later in the afternoon with a few showers too. The showers will clear away again in the evening. Highs of 13 to 17 degrees with southwesterly breezes.
More cloud will develop across the country during the evening and night with winds freshening along western areas too. Patchy light rain will drift in over Atlantic coastal counties but it will remain dry further east. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees with fresh southwesterly breezes.
Sunday
Turning rather unsettled as persistent rain continues with strengthening southwesterly winds too. The rain will be heavy at times especially along western counties. Highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees with strong and at times gusty southwesterly winds.
Sunday Night
Rain will continue for a time early in the night but gradually ease overnight however it will remain overcast. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in southerly winds, gradually easing.
