Rainfall totals for August from MET Éireann stations show that the highest rainfall was in Newport, Mayo with 179.1mm and lowest was Oak Park in Carlow with 39.8mm.

Dublin airport recorded 48.2mm while many stations in the West hit over 100mm and above average but many in East were well below average.

The level of the River Slaney in Tullow is back to its lowest level for past five weeks and lowest of the year and Carlow Weather's Alan O'Reilly says with very little rainfall expected for next seven days levels won’t improve.

A hose pipe ban remains in place for Carlow and surrounding counties.

Meanwhile there was a warm start to autumn with a high of 22.4c at Carlow Weather's station on September 1.
