'From rugby to roses' as Irish rugby legend set for Carlow Garden Festival this weekend

Ireland and Munster rugby legend Peter O'Mahony is swapping the scrum for secateurs this weekend as he joins a star-studded line-up at the Carlow Garden Festival 2025, which kicks off this Saturday, July 26.

Fresh from announcing his retirement from international rugby, O'Mahony will appear at Arboretum Home and Garden Heaven alongside BBC Gardeners' World presenter Adam Frost for a unique in-conversation event that blends sport, soil, and shared passion.

It's one of several standout moments in a nine-day festival (July 26 - August 3) featuring 19 big names in gardening, landscaping and biodiversity, with expert talks, foraging walks, garden tours and food events across Carlow's most scenic venues.

Other highlights include:

  • Matthew Wilson on "A Tale of Two Gardens" at Duckett's Grove (Sunday, July 27)
  • Thomas Pakenham on "The Tree Hunters" at Huntington Castle (Monday, July 28)
  • RHS Chelsea icon Sarah Eberle at Borris House (Thursday, July 31)

Also appearing throughout the week are Nick Bailey, Rosy Hardy, Seamus O'Brien, Fionnuala Fallon, Éanna Ní Lamhna and more.

"With a rich line-up of almost 20 gardening experts, including familiar faces and exciting new voices, the 2025 festival invites visitors of all levels – from budding gardeners to seasoned professionals – to explore the Carlow Garden Trail," said Robert Miller, Chairperson of the Carlow Garden Trail.

This year sees the launch of the Festival Bus, a free shuttle connecting Carlow Town to all major venues, making it easier than ever to explore the Carlow Garden Trail.

"The new festival bus makes it easier for visitors to travel across the county's most beautiful gardens," he added.

Events will also run at BEAM Services, An Gairdín Beo, and Delta Sensory Gardens, with a strong focus on biodiversity and inclusion.
