Works on the reopening of Leighlinbridge Garda Station should be completed by 2019, the Minister for Justice has confirmed.

Minister Charlie Flanagan said a brief of requirements was provided to the OPW in relation to the reopening of Leighlinbridge Garda Station and five others across the country.

The Programme for a Partnership Government commits to a pilot scheme to reopen 6 Garda stations, both urban and rural.

Minister Flanagan said: "Design, planning (where required) and procurement for each of the 6 stations are now being progressed by the OPW, in conjunction with the Garda, in line with all applicable processes and procedures.

"Implementation of the programme and reopening of all 6 stations is being pursued as a priority and it is understood that the OPW expects works should be completed in each case in 2019."
