Iconic Dublin football manager Jim Gavin spearheaded a review of Gaelic Football that has recommended a raft of rule changes including a 4-point goal
Former Dublin GAA manager and multiple All-Ireland winner Jim Gavin has been outlining the proposed rule changes for the game of Gaelic Football following a review.
Gavin spearheaded a review of Gaelic Football that has recommended a raft of rule changes including a 4-point goal. The Football Review Committee made a presentation on the recommendations after initial tests were carried out in behind closed door matches.
The changes have been labelled rule 'enhancements' and they are set to be showcased next week with televised interprovincial managers.
The new rules are:
1. There will be a 1 on 1 duel for throw-ins at the beginning of each half
2. There will be a 3 on 3 structure throughout meaning both teams must keep three players in the opposition half at all times
3. A new 40-metre scoring arc will be created. Points scored outside the arc will count as two, scores over the bar from inside the arc will count as one point while a goal will be worth four points
4. A goalkeeper must kick the ball beyond the 40m arc from a kickout but his own players can stay inside the 20m line
5. No more backpassing to the goalkeeper unless the passing player is also inside the large rectangle or the keeper is in the opposition half
6. A player fouled can opt for a solo and go instead of stopping to take a free kick
7. The last one is the advanced mark where a player can take a free if they catch a ball kicked from outside the 45m line inside the 20m line.
