The news comes as €2.9 million was awarded nationally

Minister Jennifer Murnane O’Connor, TD for Carlow-Kilkenny, has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Housing that €2.9 million has been awarded to local biodiversity projects. The funding is provided to local authorities for biodiversity projects under the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Local Biodiversity Action Fund (LBAF) in 2025.

The fund was established in 2018 to assist local authorities in the implementation of actions in support of biodiversity. Almost €11 million has been granted to local authorities through the LBAF since the scheme was established. The Scheme is operated by the National Parks and Wildlife Service and represents a commitment to support implementation of the Irelands 4th National Biodiversity Action Plan at community, county and regional level.

Locally, €97,378 has been allocated to Carlow for projects ranging from Orchard River Restoration Works to Wetlands Surveys.

In Kilkenny, €97,460 has been awarded for projects such as the Thomastown Biodiversity Action Plan and the Kilkenny Swift Project.

Minister Murnane O’Connor commented:

“This funding recognises the crucial role that Local authorities are playing in protecting our biodiversity. This funding will make a unique impact on our local area, as well as being part of a big national picture as we strive to protect and promote Ireland’s Biodiversity.”
