Expansion plans at Laois childcare facility gets green light

The proposed classrooms would facilitate up to an additional 44 children.

A childcare facility in Graiguecullen has been given the green light for its expansion plans. Play Together Childcare Services Ltd applied to Laois County Council to install a  single storey prefabricated unit to be used as two classrooms in conjunction with its existing childcare facility at Church Road, Graiguecullen, Carlow.

The application also sought permission for the connection to existing services and all associated site works. The local authority has this week given the project the go-ahead with twelve conditions attached.

The business owners said the expansion is needed to create more space and is a "much needed facility for this area".

"If planning were granted the applicants would be in a better position to accommodate the surrounding community," said the planning documents.

The proposed classrooms would facilitate up to an additional 44 children and it would give employment of up to four additional staff.

"There is ample space to make the additional parking spaces as required (current number of car parking spaces is a total of 17 spaces)," the application station.

"The current hours of operation are 08:00am till 18:00pm Mon. – Fri. this would remain the same should the above planning permission be granted."

Making the decision the Council planner stated: "Given the previous use of the site as a sapling school and the permitted childcare use  on the site, I consider the proposed development to be acceptable in this instance."

The Chief Executive's report agreed stating: "Having regard to its nature, extent and location, the zoning of the site and planning history  of adjacent lands, it is considered that the proposed development would be compliant with the provisions of the Laois County Development Plan 2021-2027 and the Carlow –Graiguecullen Joint Urban Local Area Plan 2024-2030 and with the proper planning and sustainable development of the area."
