Carlow has reason to celebrate this week after one of its most cherished heritage attractions was recognised among Ireland's best public parks and gardens in the 2025 Green Flag Awards.
The site, managed by the Office of Public Works, was one of just 13 OPW locations nationwide to earn a coveted Green Flag this year, as well as a highly sought-after Green Heritage Site Accreditation for excellence in conservation and history.
That standout Carlow winner was Altamont House and Gardens, renowned for its idyllic lakeside setting, sweeping lawns, rare trees and Robinsonian-style design. The estate has long been regarded as one of Ireland's most enchanting gardens, drawing visitors from across the region.

An Taisce Environmental Education announced over 120 parks, gardens and voluntary green spaces as Green Flag recipients for 2025, highlighting sustainability, biodiversity, cleanliness and community involvement as key judging criteria.
OPW Chairman John Conlon welcomed the recognition, saying: "The OPW plays a significant role in the management and conservation of some of the country's most beautiful heritage locations. I am delighted that so many of our OPW sites received the Green Flag award and the Green Heritage Site Accreditation award.
"We, in the OPW, are delighted to receive the recognition for the work that goes into the upkeep of these wonderfully diverse parks. I would particularly like to acknowledge all the OPW staff whose commitment to each location has contributed towards these awards,” he added.

Altamont was also recognised for its historical importance, with the Heritage Accreditation celebrating sites that balance environmental beauty with cultural significance and strong conservation standards.
Covering 16 hectares, the gardens feature the famed Ice Age Glen, a lakeside walk surrounded by rare trees, an arboretum, a Bog Garden, and ancient oaks that frame its natural landscape.
The double win puts Carlow firmly on the map in this year's national awards, underscoring the county's growing reputation.
