Pub owner hits back at 'corporate greed' from Diageo following latest price hike

A popular pub in Dublin has stood up against the latest price hikes from Diageo and removed some of the taps to their drinks.

It has also promised to keep pints of Guinness at €5 for it's local and loyal customers.

Kavanaghs pub on New Street in the Liberties took to social media on Monday and told it's followers what it though of the drinks giant increasing its prices for the third time in under two years.

"To say we are disappointed with yet another increase, (the 3rd in 18 months) would be an understatement.

"We are a small locals local run by a liberty boy born & bred who understands the needs of our customers.

"The last increases were down to operating costs & the huge rise in energy costs, those although unwelcome were understandable.

"However since then the industry has had 3 reductions in energy costs which for a company like Guinness would result in millions of euro in savings per annum.

"Think about how many pints are produced per annum by Diageo then multiply that by 6 (Cent) that’s billions of extra euro for a company that already posted profits last year circa 4.5 Billion it’s quite simply corporate greed, alone we won’t make a dent on their profits but collectively we could.

"I’ll be starting by pulling some of their taps out by way of Rockshore & Hophouse.

"We are not like the price gougers in certain areas of the city, We always try look after our locals that’s why yet again we will absorb this 3rd increase in 18 months on Guinness with our discount scheme for customers paying with cash & leave it at €5.

“Good portion of our customers are senior citizens who never moved to the modern card & tap era so for them they can still come in with €20 cash & have 4 pints.

"This is just for Guinness, for all other products unfortunately we will have to pass on the increase after our next delivery."

The post on Facebook got hundreds of likes with people commenting showing their support.

Diageo has blamed the latest increase on rising input costs despite energy costs and inflation decreasing, stating to pubs across the country that will in turn have to increase their prices, "We must pass on some of this additional costs to our customers."
