You know Christmas is approaching when the PDC World Darts Championship is upon us.

The biggest darts tournament of the year gets underway this Thursday, December 15 but unfortunately Carlow native Steve Lennon won't take to the Alexandra Palace stage for the first time in his professional career.

Lennon, currently ranked 54th in the world, was defeated by Jeff Smith in the qualifiers after failing to get automatic qualification for the championships.

The opening night of the tournament sees fellow Irish darts player Keane Barry take on Grant Sampson in round one before world number two Peter Wright opens his title defence in round two.

Live coverage of the PDC World Darts Championship will be on Sky Sports throughout Christmas.
