A councillor has expressed his disbelief at a Carlow estate boasting seven public bins during a debate on installing old bins on Dublin Street in Carlow Town centre.

Cllr Ken Murnane brought up the issue of Monacurragh having "seven bins in one estate" at this month's meeting of Carlow Municipal District in Town Hall.

He added: "Two bins would be more than enough."

His comments were in response to efforts by Cllr Fintan Phelan to have bins previously removed from Tullow Street - after new ones were installed - to be relocated on Dublin Street.

Cllr Phelan said a number of businesses were enquiring about the prospect of the bins being relocated.

Area engineer, Pat Harrington, said "nothing is impossible" to which Cllr Phelan replied, "It's only a bin."

Mr Harrington said there is a cost involved with new bins and with a current cost of "€1,200 per bin for maintenance" and other expenditure.

He confirmed the Council do have a few bins in the yard and are open to suggestions if the members could show him what he "could do less of" and find a way to pay for them.

The local authority has 92 public bins in Carlow Town and 37 in Tullow.

In response to Cllr Murnane's suggestion, Cllr Phelan said they would have to consult with residents of Monacurragh before they do anything.
