An Garda Síochána held checkpoint in Carlow ahead of October Bank Holiday Weekend
Two motorists were arrested for drug driving at a checkpoint in Carlow at Junction 5, Tinryland, M9 Motorway. While three vehicles were seized for no insurance.
The checkpoint was run as part of An Garda Síochána's October Bank Holiday Weekend Road Safety Campaign.
1,600 vehicles that were travelling southbound on the M9 Motorway were exited at Junction 5 to pass through the checkpoint. 345 motorists were tested for drink driving, 14 motorists were tested for drug driving.
Carlow Superintendent Anthony Farrell said "Road safety is a key part of our public safety messaging. Everything we do is focused around keeping people safe. Never is that more important than on our roads. There has been four road traffic fatalities in County Carlow this year so far. This is an alarming trend that not only causes serious concerns for An Garda Síochána but also can have major impacts on villages, towns and communities. Driver responsibility is key. It is clear drink and drug driving negatively impact driver behaviour. Please think twice before getting behind the wheel when under the influence."
