New data released from Census 2022
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has released Census 2022 Profile on Employment, Occupations and Commuting in all counties, including Carlow. The census took place on Sunday, 3rd April 2022.
In Carlow, nearly 1,900 children aged under five travelled to childcare or school. Most of these (over 1,500) travelled by car, while 233 walked and 28 went by bus.
The majority of the 6,842 primary school aged children (five to twelve years old) travelling to school in the county in April 2022 also travelled by car, with 4,282 doing so. Walking was the second most common means of travel at 1,229 children. A further 664 children used a bus while 72 children cycled.
There were 4,990 secondary students (those aged thirteen to eighteen years) travelling to school, 2,303 were driven to school in a car, while 119 drove themselves to school. There were 1,120 students using a bus, and 18 using the train. A further 1,026 students walked to school while 108 cycled.
For the 2,399 third-level students commuting, walking was the most popular means of travel, at 679 people. There were 648 students who drove, while 257 used a bus. Another 129 students travelled by train, DART or Luas while 53 cycled.
