Gardaí have appealed for information after a car hijacking in Carlow on New Year's Day has left one man in custody.

The incident involved two males and occurred at 12.50pm on the Tullow Road.

A man was sitting in his car when he was approached by the two culprits who opened the car door and threatened the driver and told him to get out of the vehicle.

The driver did so and the two males drove off and the matter was immediately reported to Carlow Garda Station.

Gardaí responded and began to search for the stolen blue Peugeot car.

The car was subsequently crashed in the Grange area and the two males left the vehicle and went across fields on foot.

Gardaí searched the area and one male was subsequently found in a ditch and he was arrested and taken to Carlow Garda Station where he remains detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Gardaí in Carlow are appealing for information and have issued text alerts to community groups seeking any information on identifying the second culprit.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Carlow Garda Station on 059 913 1505.

Gardaí also wished to thank the local text alert groups for their assistance in the matter and reminded people to always be vigilant and to respond promptly to text alerts.
