Prizes awarded to SETU Carlow students who designed a new Carlow estate

Students at South East Technological University’s Carlow campus who came up with a design for a residential estate in Carlow to attract young families and students were presented with their winning cash prizes this week. 

The Department of Built Environment at South East Technological University’s Carlow campus was delighted to welcome Glenveagh Properties plc  to present €1,000 to three construction programme students who were the winners of a competition sponsored by Glenveagh. 

After working closely with SETU’s quantity surveying and construction management programme directors, Glenveagh announced their first sponsored competition with SETU.

Students were provided with a project brief in construction technology regarding the development of a site within the vicinity of SETU’s Carlow campus. Students were tasked with developing a residential estate in the town which would attract young families and students to the area, as well as focusing on sustainable construction methods. 

The winning team members Samantha Kelly (construction management), Pauric Cush and Joseph Phelan (both quantity surveying) were presented with their prize by Ger Kiely, Commercial Director and Paula Voiseux HR Manager at Glenveagh.  

Commenting on the partnership and the competition, Paula Voiseux said: "Glenveagh has forged a strong relationship with SETU Carlow over the last number of years and has welcomed a number of work placement students as well as graduates of the Department of Built Environment. We are delighted today to award a €1,000 prize to the winning group of students whose second year construction technology module project, successfully delivered a design proposal for a residential development that took into account technical detail as well as sustainable practices and health and safety.

"We have really strong links to Carlow, especially having invested in the old Braun site to operate a timber frame production facility which will support the sustainable growth of our business as well as job creation in Carlow and we look forward to doing more with SETU and the wider community in general in the months and years ahead".
