Plans lodged to carry out maintenance and repair works to the River Barrow

River Barrow

Waterways Ireland have submitted a planning application to Carlow County Council to carry out essential maintenance and repair works to the River Barrow Navigation.

The development will consist of essential maintenance and repair works to the Barrow Navigation, in accordance with Waterways Ireland’s statutory remit, comprising the following:

  • Bank Revetment & Strengthening Works
  • Post-Flood Spot Dredging & Maintenance Dredging
  • Back-drain Maintenance
  • Small-scale Bank Repair Works
  • Trackway Surface Upgrade Works
  • 10 no. Temporary Construction Compounds
  • Temporary mobile welfare units
  • All works ancillary and incidental to the maintenance and repair works referred to above

A Natura Impact Statement (NIS) has been prepared in respect of the planning application and will be submitted with the planning application.

The works will take place along the Barrow Navigation in the townlands of: Newacre, Clogrenan, Killeeshal, Ballinabrannagh, Harristown, Bestfield or Dunganstown, Strawhall, Ballygowan,, Rathellin, Leighlinbridge,Moneybeg, Sliguff, Ballyellin and Tomdarragh, Ballyteigelea (Idrone East By), Borris, Cournellan, Ballykeenan (St Mullin's Lower By), Tinnahinch, Cloghna, Miltown, Ullard and St Mullins,, Co. Carlow

The application was submitted by Waterways Ireland on 7th February 2024.

The application is still at pre-validation stage, meaning no expected date for a decision is available yet.
