A garda investigation is taking place following the discovery of a man's body in Grattan Square in Dungarvan this morning.

The body is believed to have been discovered by street cleaners at around 6am on a bench close to the intersection between Grattan Square and Mary Street.

A section of the square was cordoned off until approximately 9.30am.

Normal business resumed in the area shortly after that time.

A Garda spokesman confirmed they are investigating all circumstances surrounding the discovery of the remains.

The body was removed to Waterford University Hospital where a post-mortem is due to take place at a later date. It is understood that the results of the post mortem will determine the course of the investigation.

The garda investigation is ongoing.
