Young Irish man who tragically died in drowning incident in Greece is named locally

RIP Rory Deegan from Cullohill

A young Irish man who tragically died in Greece at the weekend has been named locally as Rory Deegan from Cullohill, Co Laois.

The 22-year-old was on the Greek island of Zakynthos when the tragedy occurred on Sunday.

It’s believed he was found unresponsive in a pool by friends and despite efforts at resuscitation, he was pronounced dead.

It’s understood the student had been on holiday with a number of friends from the Laois area when tragedy struck.

Rory attended Colaiste Mhuire Johnstown and played for Harps GAA.

He comes from a very popular well known family and his parents Joe and Diane Deegan run Deegan’s Centra in Urlingford, Co Kilkenny.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is reportedly providing consular assistance to the family.
