The man who died in a traffic accident over the weekend in Mayo has been named locally as Ciaran Keating, father of Cork City player Ruairí and a brother of singer Ronan Keating.

Tributes were paid by Cork City FC with the club saying it was deeply saddened at the passing of Mr Keating, father of their player Ruairí.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to Ruairí and the entire Keating family at this exceptionally difficult time. May he rest in peace. We ask that the family’s privacy be respected at this difficult time. Funeral arrangements will be confirmed in due course," the social media post said.

Ruarí Keating was playing for Cork City on Saturday afternoon but was substituted at half time.

It is believed that the late Mr Ciaran Keating had been living in Mayo for more than a decade and was well-known in the area, having run a local bar.

A statement issued by gardaí confirmed that gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a fatal two vehicle traffic collision in County Mayo on Saturday, 15th July 2023.

The incident occurred at approximately 3.35pm on the N5 at Ballymiles near Swinford.

A driver from one these vehicles, a man in his 50s, suffered fatal injuries, the statement confirmed.

The male driver of the second vehicle was taken to Mayo University Hospital to receive treatment for serious injuries.

A man and woman, both passengers from each car, also received treatment, the garda statement said. Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

A technical examination of the scene was conducted by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators on Saturday evening and the road has since re-opened.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Swinford Garda Station on (094) 925 2990, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
