Driver of luxury sports car arrested for travelling  at more than 200km/h on busy road

The driver of a luxury sports car which was detected travelling at more than 200km/h on a busy road is facing a possible driving ban and a conviction for dangerous driving.

The motorist was arrested and charged over the weekend after gardai detected a car which was travelling at 217km/h on the N17 in County Mayo - 117km above the speed limit.

The detection was made on Saturday by members of the Mayo Roads Policing Unit who were patrolling the Knock Bypass.

"The driver was arrested for dangerous driving and later charged and released to appear before Castlebar District Court," read a post on social media highlighting the incident.

Separately, the driver of another luxury sports car is facing criminal charges after that vehicle was detected travelling at a speed of 159km/h in a 100km/h zone.

That incident also happened in County Mayo on Saturday - on the N5 at Charlestown.
