Pharmacists will now be able to dispense oral contraception without a prescription as part of a new government Bill.
The Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, will bring the plans to the Cabinet under the general scheme and draft of the Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill.
In addition, an expert taskforce has also been set up to support the expansion of pharmacoes, as well as exploring minor ailment schemes and independent prescribing.
At present, free contraception is currently available to women aged over 17 but under 30.
