Protest calls for justice for Brazilian man involved in collision with Garda car

A protest has taken place in Dublin after a Brazilian man was injured following a collision with an Irish police car.

The incident happened on Saturday afternoon after gardai responded to a report that a motorbike had been stolen from a delivery driver in Sandyford.

Later a Garda car was in collision with a man close to the M50 in Tallaght.

The Garda Ombudsman is investigating what happened.

A Brazilian national who has been living in Ireland for several years, is understood to have been seriously injured.

He has been named locally as Joao Henrique.

A crowd gathered at the Spire on O’Connell Street, many wearing white and scores of delivery drivers on mopeds, on Monday afternoon for the demonstration.

Banners urging Justice For Joao were held by participants.

The procession made its way to Pearse Street Garda station.

On Saturday, gardai confirmed it attended a road traffic incident close to Junction 11 of the M50 in Dublin at around 3.30pm on Saturday.

“The incident involved an official Garda vehicle and a pedestrian,” they said.

“A male pedestrian (20s) was later taken to Tallaght University Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment for serious injuries.

“His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.”

The force said it had referred the incident that happened that day to the watchdog.

“As an official Garda vehicle was involved in this incident, this matter has been referred to the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission (GSOC),” they added.

The Garda Ombudsman has appealed to any witnesses who observed what happened, and who have any CCTV, dashcam or mobile footage to contact investigators on 0818 600 800 or info@gsoc.ie.
