Two due in court over major cocaine seizure at Foynes Port

TWO MEN were were being questioned about the seizure of €21 million worth of cocaine on a cargo vessel at Foynes Port in County Limerick earlier this week have been charged by investigating gardai.

Five men - aged 50, 46, 44, 41 and 35 years - were arrested on Friday morning while a sixth, whose aged 32, was arrested on Friday evening.

In an update, issued this Christmas Eve, a garda spokesperson said: "Two men (aged 32 and 35) have been charged in connection with this investigation and are expected to appear before a special sitting of Limerick District Court this (Christmas Eve) afternoon. Four other individuals arrested as part of this investigation have been released without charge and files are being prepared for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Earlier this week, it was confirmed that 300kg of cocaine was seized onboard the Verila (pictured) on Tuesday.

The vessel sails under the flag of Malta but it's understood is is Bulgarian-owned.

The ship, which has now been formally seized by Revenue, had travelled from Montreal Canada, having left on Saturday, December 9.

Investigations are ongoing.
