GAA club leads tributes after untimely death of Irish soldier

The late Niall McDonnell

Tributes have been paid to a Newbridge native who sadly passed away. 

Niall McDonnell was a member of the Defence Forces, and he was also described by Sarsfields GAA Club in Newbridge as 'a true Sash man.'

Extended family members own and operate McDonnell's Bar or Neeson's in Newbridge.

Sarsfields GAA Club wrote on its official Facebook page: "Sarsfields GAA are deeply deeply saddened by the the untimely passing of Niall McDonnell.

"Niall was a true Sash man (Son of Sarsfields).

"Niall is going to be missed sorely by his wonderful loving family Jobie, Frances, Joseph, Claire, Paula and Brian and his niece Layla & extended family and friend."

A member of the Defence Forces Headquarters Communications and Information Services Corps, Amy Crook, also had this to say about the late Niall McDonnell: "Thinking of all the McDonnell family, absolutely devastating news. Niall was such a nice fella and a pleasure to work with.

"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."

A number of Newbridge businesses paid tributes to the late soldier, including Moloney's Bar and Music Venue.

Management for the pub said in a statement: "Moloney’s Bar & Music Venue extend our deepest sympathies to the McDonnell and Murray family on the loss of Niall McDonnell.

"Our sincere thoughts are with Jobie and Frances, all the McDonnell & Murray families and all of Niall’s friends and comrades at this very difficult time.

"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."

In addition, the management of The Inn at Milltown paid tribute to the late Niall McDonnell: "We at The Inn are very sad to learn of the untimely passing of Niall.

"Sending our warm regards to all his family and friends.

"May he rest in eternal peace."

FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

Arrangements have changed - Time change.

Reposing at his family home from 4pm on Friday until 8pm with Rosary at 7pm.

Removal by Glennons Funeral Directors on Saturday morning to arrive at St Conleth’s Parish Church, Newbridge, for requiem mass at 11.30am.

Burial afterwards in St Conleth’s Cemetery, Newbridge.

Family flowers only please.
