Explainer: Instagram is limiting the 'political content' on your feed. Here's how to turn it off

As part of a Meta initiative, Instagram is limiting the 'political content' on their users' feed.

First announced on February 9, the change has been implemented on the platform over the past couple of days.

Users will see less of what Meta deems to be "political content" in their feed, as well as in their recommendations.

Meta has described political content as “laws, elections or social topics” but the company has not provided more detail on what they deem to be political.

When the change was first announced in February, the company said they were focused on making Instagram "a great experience for everyone".

In recent days, the platform has already been criticised by social media users as they discovered they unwillingly have been involved in Meta's new initiative, which reduces the 'political content' on Instagram, as well as on Threads.

The company has been accused of censorship amid upcoming political elections and the war in Gaza.

Although, there is a way to turn it off.

Enabled by default, the feature is easy to change via Instagram settings.

From the 'settings and activity' section, users can go into 'settings and privacy', scroll down to the 'what you see' section. From there, users can tap 'content preferences' and select 'political content'.

Two options are available in this section. Either to 'limit political content from people you don't follow' or 'don't limit political content from people you don't follow'.
