Unaccompanied learner drivers had their cars seized in recent days after they were stopped at garda checkpoints.

Gardaí confirmed that three cars were seized from drivers who were driving on learner permits, without having a fully qualified driver with them.

"Gardaí from the Dublin Metroplitan Region West were carrying out an intoxicant checkpoint on the Ratoath Road recently. Three cars were seized because their drivers were unaccompanied learners," gardaí confirmed on social media.

They added that fixed charge penalty notices were issued to all the drivers and court proceedings will follow.

According to the Road Safety Authority, a learner permit allows you to drive on all public roads, except motorways, for the purposes of learning to drive and only when accompanied by an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) or someone who has held a valid driving licence in the same category for more than two years.

It also means that you can take Essential Driver Training (EDT) with an ADI, but you must display L-plates at all times on any vehicle you drive.
