Birmingham Airport was forced to temporarily suspend operations after a security incident on an Aer Lingus flight earlier today.

The Aer Lingus EI3647 flight, operated by Emerald Airlines, to Belfast returned to Birmingham following reports of a "suspicious object" on board.

The plane was diverted shortly after take-off and landed back at Birmingham airport just after 4pm.

Aer Lingus later confirmed that the "undeclared item" discovered on the flight was "not a security risk".

Footage on social media of the scene showed emergency vehicles on the runway.

A spokesperson for the airport said on Tuesday evening: “Birmingham Airport reopened at 1800 hours following a security incident on an aircraft.

"All passengers and crew disembarked safely.

"Customers are advised to check with their airline, or on the Birmingham Airport website, before checking in due to potential delays."
