Gardaí have caught a motorist travelling over double the speed limit in a 50km/h zone as part of National Slow Down Day.
Eighty one speeding vehicles were detected in the first five hours of the roads policing operation out of 41,630 checked by GoSafe technology.
One of the highest speeds detected includes a vehicle travelling at 112km/h in a 50km/h zone on Main Street, Charleville in Co Cork.
Other speeds recorded include 75km/h in a 50km/h zone on the N84 Castlequarter in Cloonboo, Co Galway, 63km/h in a 50km/h zone on the James Larkin Road in Dublin 5, 121km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N21 Rineroe in Adare in Co Limerick, 60km/h in a 50km/h zone on the R742 Parknacross in Courtown, Co Wexford, 95km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R418 Aghanure in Athy, Co Kildare, and 95km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R772 Moyne Lower in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford.
An Garda Síochána are thanking drivers for their compliance during the first five hours of National Slow Down Day, making Irish roads safer for all road users.
They continue to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads.
