Banned driver using cardboard cut-out as insurance disc caught turning at Garda checkpoint

A disqualified driver seen turning away from a Garda checkpoint has been caught using a cardboard cut-out as a fake insurance disc.

Gardaí took off in pursuit of the vehicle after spotting the driver of the car turning while officers were conducting a morning checkpoint in rural Wexford.

The Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system detected that the car wasn't insured or taxed, and had no NCT, and An Garda Síochána stated they were "alarmed" to discover the motorist was also disqualified from driving.

When the car was stopped, officers spotted a cardboard cut-out being used as a fake insurance disc.

A Garda spokesperson stated, "[It's] certainly one we don't see too often."

The car was seized and proceedings will follow.
