Tragedy as man (60s) dies in workplace accident on N55 road in Longford

N55 on the outskirts of Ballymahon preserved for examination

Gardaí in Longford, alongside the Health and Safety Authority (HSA), have launched an investigation after a man in his 60s tragically lost his life on Thursday night in a workplace accident on the N55 on the outskirts of Ballymahon.

Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after 7.30pm following reports that a man had been struck by a works vehicle.

Planned overnight roadworks to facilitate resurfacing works had just got underway along the busy stretch of road on the N55 Athlone Road close to a local service station when tragedy struck. 

A Garda spokesperson outlined, "Gardaí are investigating the circumstances of a fatal workplace incident in Ballymahon, Co. Longford, on Thursday, May 16, 2024.

"Shortly after 7:30 pm, Gardaí and Emergency Services were alerted after a male in his 60s, who was working on a closed section of Athlone Road, Ballymahon, was struck by a works vehicle.

"He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

"The area is preserved for examination, and the HSA and local Coroner have been notified."
