Exclusive: Gymnastics coach suspended as Gardaí launch probe amid inappropriate behaviour allegations

A gymnastics coach has been suspended by Gymnastics Ireland after allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

The Donegal-based male coach was stood down by Gymnastics Ireland, the national governing body for the sport, and an investigation into the allegations continues.

The coach is attached to a club that is affiliated to Gymnastics Ireland.

While the coach is under suspension, a Garda probe is also underway into the matter and the authorities continue to liaise with the relevant bodies.

“Gymnastics Ireland were made aware of a matter that has been reported to An Garda Síochána,” a Gymnastics Ireland spokesperson confirmed to Donegal Live.

“As per our policies and standard procedure we immediately suspended the individual in question pending the outcome of a Garda investigation.

“While this process is underway we are not in a position to comment any further. We remain in contact with the relevant authorities.”

The coach at the centre of the allegations worked mainly with underage gymnasts.

Donegal Live understands that a young person raised concerns with a parent over alleged contact of a sexual nature by a coach.

It is believed that the initial accusation subsequently prompted further complaints of a similar nature.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that a complaint has been received and said “a Garda investigation is ongoing at this time.”

The spokesperson said that no further information is available.

Donegal Live has learned that a Garda has been assigned to the matter and statements from several parties have been taken.

It is understood that Tusla - Child and Family Agency has also been involved in the matter.

Tusla is the dedicated State agency responsible for improving wellbeing and outcomes for children.

A spokesperson said it does not comment on individual cases “to protect the privacy of the children and families we work with.”
