Shocking early morning crash leaves man, 80s, dead and three others with major injuries

The Westmeath collision occurred at about 5.30am this Wednesday

Gardaí are investigating the second crash in the Castlepollard area in two days.

Gardaí and emergency services are currently at the scene of a fatal two-vehicle road traffic collision involving cars, that occurred on the R394 at Gartlandstown, Castlepollard, Co Westmeath.

The collision occurred at approximately 5.30am this Wednesday, July 3, 2024.

The male passenger of the first car (aged in his 80’s) was pronounced deceased at the scene. The female driver (60’s) was conveyed to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore hospital for treatment for serious injuries.

The male driver of the second car (30’s) was conveyed to Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar, for treatment for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.

The male passenger (20’s) was conveyed to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore hospital for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.

The road is currently closed for technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R394 between Mullingar and Castlepollard, Co Westmeath, between 4.45am and 5.45am this Wednesday, July 3, 2024, are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

Yesterday, July 2, 2024, Gardaí were alerted to a vehicle which had collided with a roadside ditch in the same area. The male driver of the car, aged in his 50s and sole occupant of the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene.
