A man is being detained and questioned by gardai after he allegedly barricaded himself inside his family home for several hours on Thursday night.

Gardaí say they responded to an incident of criminal damage at a premises in Ballina town, Co. Mayo at around 6pm and that following this, an adult male barricaded himself inside his family residence.

"An Garda Síochána initiated its Operational Command protocol, appointing an On-Scene Commander. Local Garda negotiators from the National Negotiators Unit, along with several other Garda units, attended the scene," said a spokesperson.

A cordon was put in place for several hours and, after negotiations, the incident was "peacefully resolved" shortly before 11:30pm.

"The male involved, aged in his 30s, was arrested at the scene and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a garda station in the North Western Region," added the garda spokesperson.

There are no reports of any injuries and gardai have not publicly disclosed the nature of the alleged criminal damage.

Investigations are ongoing.
