Irish sleep expert shares one simple tip on how to avoid the snooze button each morning

Sleep expert Tom Coleman says you should set a 'reverse snooze alarm' to help you wake up in the morning

Ahead of the clocks going back an hour at the end of this month, one Irish sleep expert has shared a simple tip on how you can avoid repeatedly hitting the snooze button each morning when your alarm goes off.

According to Health Scientist and Sleep Coach Tom Coleman those who are tempted to hit snooze should instead set what he describes as a 'reverse snooze button'.

"If I have to get up at 6am and I want my seven-and-a-half hours (of sleep) that means I should be asleep by 10.30," he explained while chatting with Ciara Kelly on Newstalk Breakfast.

"What I need to do then is figure out how long it takes me to unwind and fall asleep. So, If I need to be asleep at 10.30, maybe I need to be in bed at ten; maybe I need to be off the phone at 9.30 so I set an alarm for 9.30 to remind myself," he added.

The expert, who agrees that the early-morning alarm can be 'horrible' for many people, says getting a good night's sleep is hugely beneficial and that people should aim to wake up as gently as possible.

"If you are struggling to get up, if it's really difficult to get up, my biggest suggestion is that you need to get to bed a little bit earlier. You are shooting yourself in the foot if you hit the snooze button too many times so instead set what I call a reverse snooze button," he told listeners.
